It was so nice to be welcomed back to Abertillery Amateur Drama and Musical Society, with their production of “Little Shop of Horrors”.

As with many societies this production has been the first since the national COVID crisis and the joy of being back on the stage was very obvious, in the enthusiasm of the whole cast and the production team.  The small cast maintained a positive energy throughout the performance and managed to make the story or plot very clear, which is not always achieved with this particular show and must be commended.

When the main prop is a talking plant, the choreography can be challenging and once again, it must be said, the cast made it look very natural. Well done to Rob Bayton, the voice of Audrey two was very effective and gave the plant a great character.

Simon Shelford as Mr Mushnik clearly showed his stage experience, both vocally and in his characterisation, giving a strong performance. An excellent choice of casting in the roles of Audrey and Seymour, with lovely performances by Abi Hodges and Harry Bayton. A very emotional duet and very good solo performances from this couple.

We all love to hate the villain and Gareth Baskerville as Orin Scrivello gave an excellent performance, giving a twist to the villainy with some excellent comic timing.

The whole performance from beginning to end is interspersed with the appearance of The Ronettes, played by Tila Dawn Edmunds, Rhian Evans, Sophie Betteridge, Georgia Miller, and Lauren Hodges. I must congratulate their performance; it was a joy to watch. They certainly made a big impact on the production.

The stage setting must be congratulated. Working around a giant plant and providing depth within the setting without unnecessary interruption was achieved seamlessly. The show was a pleasure to watch, and obviously enjoyed by both audience and cast. I look forward to further invitations, well done to you all.
