Lights up Junior is a variety show for the youth section of Lytton players.  What is great about a show like this is, is that when done well, it really highlights the various skills and talents.  I am a very strong believer that shows such as this are very important for the confidence of young performers especially since the pandemic.

The company comprises of a junior (Abbie Lawther-Pratt, Abigail Goodall, Annie Paice, Finn Clynes, Kuzey Kara, Olive Richardson Olivia Timbrell, Roxanne Perry-Holland) section and a senior (Aedan Cacanindin, Caleb Melarkey, Chloe Miles, Oliver Cuzner, Phoebe Smith-Holland, Rosie Lawther-Pratt, Seven Miles Sophia Brooks, William Maskell) section.  It is not possible to mention all performances, however I will mention sections and performances that stood out to me.

Choreography was simple but all the cast were together and sometimes simple choreography, but the cast together looks good, it’s especially good that one of the choreographers Rosie Lawther-Pratt is a member of the youth cast.

Compering a show such as this is not an easy thing to do but Seven Miles did a good job, I was impressed that for someone so young she had the ability to keep the show going and she interacted with the audience and improvised as well.

Abbie Lawther-Pratt performed Naughty from Matilda, with lovely innocence but she had a naughty twinkle in her eye, this was a well-polished performance.  Dyin Ain’t so bad from Bonnie and Clyde is a difficult song especially for someone so young but Rosie Lawther -Pratt gave a beautiful, measured performance, not just hitting the right notes in the song but hitting the right emotional notes as well, well done.

Variety shows give the opportunity to showcase talent and Aeden Cacanindin piano playing was great and a nice change pace in the show.

The Sketch that Goes Wrong was a great piece of drama, the jokes funny and well delivered as well as a perfectly timed walk by Aeden, very funny.

I was made aware that one of the cast was unwell, but the audience were not made aware, which made William Maskell’s performance of That’s life even more impressive as he was supposed to be performing with Hannah Gibson, however he did it on his own and the audience were none the wiser, well done and my hats off to William.

Thank you to Heather Lawther for her hospitality and well done to the cast.
