This event was organised to show that musical theatre was an activity that boys of all ages could take part in for enjoyment, to promote teamwork and to build self confidence – hopefully without facing ridicule and bullying from their peers. Some 60 boys aged 6 to 18 years from various groups in the town – Starlights Musical Theatre, MJR Vocal Tuition, 6.1.0 Dance Academy, Hannah Donaldson Music Theatre, North East Community Music, 1st and 4th Boys Brigade companies, Satorishido Martial Arts and Broch Amateur Boxing Club – took to the stage in front of a full house audience to show what they could do - and my goodness did they deliver! Each of the participants from the youngest to the oldest was a star whether they were singing a solo or in an ensemble, whether they were dancing a solo or as part of a group or playing an instrument solo (5 young pianists) or in a concert ensemble (7 members of North East Community Music orchestra). Introductions to the various items were presented by some of the boys showing that by being members of the groups they had built up the confidence to speak in front of a hall full of people and also to express what being a member meant to them. There were too many highlights to name each of them but I must make special mention of Ajay Morrice’s rendition of Alan Menken’s song “Proud of Your Boy” which brought a tear to the eye and I’m sure summed up the feeling that all the parents and grandparents in the audience were feeling. Another highlight was the rendition by the MJR/Starlights Intermediates & Seniors of the rousing “Seize The Day” to bring the evening to a close – surely the motto all the boys should carry into their future lifes. Congratulations to everyone who took part in this uplifting production.
