This show was dedicated to the memory of society stalwart, who sadly died suddenly, earlier in the year.
The show featured four classical musical shows, Billy Elliot, Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar and Hairspray.
There were some excellent solos, ensembles and dances during all four sections. Billy Elliot featured both the adult and junior members. Lynn Patton featured strongly, and young Alex French was a very good Billy Elliot. Cats took us to the interval, this performance featured the junior and youth members of the society, again some very good choreography and ensembles.Well done to all these young people.
The second half features were Jesus Christ Superstar and Hairspray, two totally different shows. Jesus, relating the last six days of his life, and Hairspray, set in 1960’s Baltimore, and featuring, the racial unrest in the United States during that period. Chris McQuire, featured very strongly as Jesus and was strongly supported by Michael Cairns and Lynn Patton, as well as the strong chorus.
Finally we were introduced to the main characters of Hairspray, Stacy Giles as Tracy, Jonathan Patton as Corny Collins, Terry Minter as Edna and again a very strong chorus. The show ended with a rousing performance of ‘You Can’t Stop the Beat’, very very well performed and a very suitable finale to a very good show.
A very good all round evenings entertainment from MADS. Lighting and sound, generally worked well, and the backing tracks , were well followed by the confident company. The show was clearly well enjoyed by an enthusiastic and almost capacity audience.
