I was very pleased to be invited to this charity musical concert which was presented by the Society to commemorate the outbreak of the 1st World War and the anniversary of D Day.  Despite the appalling weather there was a full house, with the audience enjoying the evening and reminiscing about past times.  There was also a static display of items, principally of uniforms from past years.

The Concert opened with a dialogue between two soldiers discussing how the troops could be entertained.  What followed was an excellent concert party with a reminder from Jim Cowper singing on how to “Keep the Home Fires Burning”, and with Joan Fothergill singing “I’ll Make a Man of You”.  An excellent and strong chorus kept us entertained with old favourites such as “Who Do You Think You Are Kidding, Mr Hitler?” to “There’ll Always Be An England”

In the second half of the Show, the Society was joined by the Northumbria Army Cadet Force Pipes and Drums together with their Highland Dancers – trained by the 204 (Tyneside Scottish) Battery.  This group was also celebrating the centenary of their formation.  The concert party, with Barbara Simpson, entertained us with the “White Cliffs of Dover” supported by Lisa Givens with “A Nightingale Sang In Berkley Square”

The two soldiers at the end agreed that it had been an excellent Concert Party – a sentiment with which I totally agree.

All of the profits from this Concert were being given to the “Help for Heroes” charity, in recognition of which a cheque for over £1000 was given to representatives of the charity.
