From the moment of their first entrances, such was the professionalism shown by the very talented cast, it was very easy to forget that none of them was over the age of 20. Seventeen year old Hamish Somers gave a towering performance as Jean Valjean – his “Bring Him Home” left not a dry eye in the house. Forbes Beedie as his nemesis Inspector Javert gave a very strong, mature performance. Rachael Boyes was an excellent Fantine – her rendition of “I Dreamed A Dream” was very moving. Sam Garioch (Marius), Sarah Innes (Cosette) and Megan Mackenzie (Eponine) as the love triangle were very strong and their “A Heart Full of Love” was delightful. A strong performance as the student leader Enjorlas was given by Gregor Robertson. Light relief came in the form of the comically talented Cameron Bartlett and Keirah Kirton as the inn keepers Monsieur and Madame Thenardier – their antics and facial expressions during “Master of the House” had the audience roaring with laughter. Mention too must be made of two younger members – Beth Nicholson as Young Cosette who sweetly sang “Castle on a Cloud” and Samuel Anderson as the resourceful ragamuffin Gavroche. The full company sounded magnificent in the rousing numbers “Do You Hear The People Sing?” and “One Day More” but showed their versatility in the quieter, reflective “Drink With Me”.

The set was simple but effective and allowed for an easy flow between scenes. Costuming was appropriate to the period and characters. The whole production was outstanding and fully deserved the prolonged applause and standing ovation from the first night crowd. Well done Leading Lights!
