Les Miserables is a sung-through musical with music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, lyrics by Alain Boublil & Jean-Marc Natel and the English adaptation by Herbert Kretzmer. It is based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo.

The Cecil Hepworth auditorium was packed with an enthusiastic audience. The programme was beautifully arranged and illustrated, with good photographs of the cast and details of future productions.

The set was huge and hugely impressive. It was neatly adapted to different purposes…such as bordello, bridge and barricade. Stage management was always carried out smoothly and unobtrusively. Props and furniture were attractive & suitable and always handled naturally.

Costumes were attractive and generally appropriate for the characters and the period. This must have been quite a massive undertaking to cater for so many people and characters. The chaperones are also to be congratulated for guarding and guiding this host to their places.

Ffion Aynsley had coached and developed fine vocals from the large cast.  Steve Humphrys’ big band gave a good accompaniment.

The standard of performance was very high. ALL of the cast moved confidently & correctly, sang & spoke vigorously and were totally focussed on their characters. Solos & duets were beautifully sung and ensemble numbers, such as Do you Hear the People Sing and One Day More were hugely enjoyable; and the defence of the barricade was excitingly presented.

Toby, his cast and crew have created a thoroughly satisfying production, full of energy and spectacle.
