I was really looking forward to this production of Les Miserables – it is one of my favourite shows and I was not disappointed. The talent that these youngsters have is unbelievable.
Cameron Barlow playing Jean Valjean and Lewis Devitt as Javert were both very strong characters, well matched in singing and in acting. Valjean gave a very emotional and moving performance with his rendition of “ Bring Him Home “ and Javert equally matched him with “ Stars “.
The ladies mustn`t be forgotten - Fantine played by Molly Field, Cosette played by Caris Kerr and Eponine played by Hannah Featham-Jackson. I loved the number “ A Heart Full of Love “ with Cosette Marius and Eponine. They made their parts their own. Caris Kerr has the most beautiful voice.
Marius played by Connor Wood – what can I say – this young man, just like a good wine gets better and better, he sang beautifully. I loved the womens chorus singing “ Turning “ which moved into Marius singing “ Empty Chairs and Empty Tables “ a really moving experience. His voice holds such tenderness for one so young. He is somebody we must keep an eye on.
Enjolras played by Oliver Banks led the students into battle with the songs “ Look Down “ and “ Red and Black “. A young star in the making, Gavroche played by Alex McCormack needs a special mention as do Young Cosette played by Caitlin McIntosh and young Eponine played by Lydia Hetherington.
The Thenardiers played by Sarah McDougall and Thomas Lowes had the brashness and bawdiness needed for these two characters. They certainly brought some light relief to the goings on.
The scenery was great, the battle scenes were fantastic as were the lighting and sound effects which really added to the atmosphere. The barricade worked exceptionally well, everybody on stage playing their part in putting it together. The scene in which Javert commits suicide was done so well and needs special mention.
Martin Craig must be very pleased with the production. It was very slick and moved along at a quick pace. The costumes and hair were all in keeping with the period, and the movement and choreography were well done. This was shown in the ” Lovely Ladies “ scene. Some very raunchy ladies indeed. Well done Cathy Fidler.
Paul Blake had obviously worked very hard with the youngsters, giving everybody a chance to shine on stage. All the principals and chorus gave 100% and many adult groups would be pleased with the end result. The finale worked so well, it was so full of emotion, there was not a dry eye in the house. The standing ovation was so well deserved. It was lovely to hear the National Anthem at the beginning of the show. Thank you for a super night and your hospitality.
