The play is set in modern day London before and following the introduction of new legislation which limits the number of words which each person can speak or write during the day, though there are exceptions. Oliver and Bernadette initially meet in a pet cemetery and during the course of the action we see the impact this “Hush Law” has on them as individuals and on their relationship.
In the spirit of “Quietude” here are 140 words on the production....
---------------
This two-hander by Sam Steiner was brilliantly executed by Lucy Farrar as Bernadette and Duncan Stuart as Oliver who engaged the audience in the development of their relationship and its ongoing challenges. The scene changes were deftly handled through lighting and the use of audio visual screens. The set was simple and costumes were the same throughout which ensured that the pace was maintained. The actors used mime to reflect the furniture in their kitchen and cleverly moved chairs to be a park bench, sofa or bed. The key to the changes was the way the performers managed to switch emotions and levels of drama to represent the different stages and times in their relationship. Congratulations to Director Alex Watkins as this play was hugely challenging and his direction ensured that the audience were left wondering ‘what next for them?

And I think this proves the hypothesis of the play, 140 words really isn’t enough….It was an excellent portrayal and I was hugely impressed with all elements of the production which were slick and sharp and the two actors portrayed their characters perfectly with strong acting, clear narrative and confident movement around the performance area.
Great work from everyone at Huddersfield Thespians who brought Steiners contemporary drama to life, whilst no doubt leaving the audience to ponder on its relevance to life today.
