The Society kicked off their 2017 season with a concert entitled Legends and Icons. As the Title suggests it was a tribute, paying homage to classical composers and artists from stage, screen and those legends of the modern music industry.
The Society’s core strength, values and reputation, built up over the years under some fine Musical Directors, is its excellent range of company voices, interlaced with exceptional soloists. This production followed that pattern. Under the talents of Director Natalie Elleithy, Musical Director Steph Kay and Assistant Musical Director Jonny Winter, the production was packed with 40 numbers which showcased the Society at its best.
Using minimal staging but with fine lighting to compensate, which enhanced the show, it proved to be a lovely evening’s entertainment for a well filled house.
With a third of the members from a cast of 36 having some form of solo work to do it would be unfair to single out any performances from the rest. Inevitably there were some who were better than others but that will always be the case with so much talent on display. However none detracted from the overall performance.
Going back to my original theme the highlights from a personal perspective were the Group and Full Chorus numbers including the renditions of Joseph, Somewhere from West Side Story, The James Bond Medley, American Trilogy, Abba’s Thank You for The Music, California Dreamin’ Midnight Train to Georgia, The Rose, and last but by no means least Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, the latter making what little hair I have stand on end.
