This is a very American musical set as the curtain rises in the Delta Nu Sorority House at University California, Los Angeles where we meet Elle Woods (Anna Cowen), the President of Sorority with her friends all abuzz with the rumour of Elle’s likely engagement to her boyfriend Warner (Ewan Pringle). It does not happen as he decides to move on and drops her as looking for someone more serious. Elle is furious and applies for and obtains (in the most unlikely circumstances) placement in Harvard Law School. The plot and counter-plots move fast and furious and we meet teaching assistant Emmett Forrest (Jack McNeilage) and Law Professor Callahan (Kevin Glasgow). The story involves Elle meting up with Warner at Law School who has a new girl-friend Vivienne (Rebecca Baillie) and later a Courtroom drama.
Space does not permit complete description of the plot or analysis of all of the characters but other main principals in addition to those mentioned above, included Katy Carey as Paulette and Jo Thomson as Brooke. All other principals played convincing supporting roles. The nimble and smiling dance troupe of nine, being some of Elle’s other friends in the Delta Nus had excellent dance routines – a tribute to the choreographer. Elle’s dogs in the show were Bruiser (played by Chico Azul, a pedigree Chhuahua) and Rufus (played by Ozzy, an English Bulldog).
I think this was a challenging and difficult show to rehearse and stage but the production team put it all together in a convincing and competent way to present a grand show. Although I did not know the music, it played well and was enjoyable to hear.
