This show is an American feel good script with humour, good songs and great moral messages which the cast of Crash Bang Wallop obviously enjoyed performing it, and was warmly received by the audience.
The opening number was bright and energetic with some lovely harmonies from the girls ensemble. Olivia Dell-Price took on her first lead role as “Elle”, giving her very expressive characterisation, playing the excitable bubbly, but dippy home girl. Her songs and script then allowed the development of an accomplished lady showing what an accomplished performer she has become to deserve this lead role. Well done.
The scene change into the restaurant number gave good contrast and an atmospheric intimate scene with some good lighting effects. The boyfriend “Warner” was performed by Jonny Friesem who took on the part with nice effect, almost becoming the “baddie” of the script as he portrayed the selfish shallow and driven young man.
The scenes then continued to flow with many changes all accomplished at a pace and smoothly, with cross scene lighting used to enhance change flows. The set was home built and well designed and gave nice effects of the many places required and repeated.
At Harvard befriended by “Emmett”, played by Morgan Burgess who once again had such a good voice, singing style and characterisation, meant romance blossomed as the script revealed. The new girlfriend “Vivienne” who takes to “Warner” was played well by Georgia Williams with a lovely voice and good change of her attitude.
Professor Callahan” was played well by Nic Clayson, good severe characterisation and a nice smooth singing voice. Elle's new friend “Paulette”, Anna Robertson, had a lovely warm voice, and played the good comedy part. Another comedy moment was “Grandmaster Chad” played by Joe Morton who had lovely attitude, and gave an excellent rap song into a duet with “Elle”. Another was the post man “Kyle”, who takes “Paulette’s” heart, played by Ben Kelly with his great swagger that gave more fun. “Brooke’s” fitness skipping scene, led by Ella Smith, even with slight rope glitches, was well rehearsed, sung well, in stop and start scene changes, and lovely energy by all the girls. In the court case the witness “Nikos”, Will Dell Price, had a good ‘foreign’ accent and gave good characterisation with some great posing.
The Company numbers were all well-rehearsed, good sounds and was nice to see full use of age range of the 40 cast members. There was some nice choreography, well drilled, and the costumes bright and colourful.
The hidden orchestra gave a clean look to the stage, and sounded lovely. A really enjoyable show and well performed by all. Thanks you for a great evening.
