‘OMG you guys!’ Yep, that was exactly what I went out of the theatre singing after watching Musical Youth Theatre Stafford’s energetic performance of Legally Blonde at the Gatehouse Theatre.

Legally Blonde has become a popular musical. It has a pink and fluffy exterior but it also contains a more relevant message of not judging a book by its cover.

Whilst some of the subject matter of the show and language used is not really suited to a young company of performers, MYTs did well to carry it off with a mature attitude and gave their all to make it a solid secure performance.

The hired set worked well although the scene changes needed to be a little less intrusive. Costumes were mostly appropriate to the given time and character and the simple props and staging worked well. Lighting can be used to great effect to create atmosphere and pin point areas on the stage, at times this was a little haphazard with missed cues. The direction and choreography were well drilled and the band was first class although at times drowned out the young vocals on stage.

The principal performers did a good job with this difficult show, each performer creating good strong characters with individual personalities and styles throughout. Mollie Harriman as the blonde bombshell, Elle Woods, gave a confident bubbly performance, this is a demanding role but Mollie gave it all she had. Well done. Other notable performances were from Alex Young, as Emmott, who was so likeable, Lydia Thomson as the slightly wacky Paulette and Cydney Beech, as Vivienne, who portrayed a strong independent woman with some great vocals. The Delta Nu girls brought a great burst of energy and girliness onto stage and the dogs definitely had the cute factor.

The whole company from the youngest to the oldest were well used throughout and were obviously having a fantastic time on stage. The audience were swept along with the story and enjoyed this well presented show.

Well done to all involved.
