Another stunning success for The CTC following “West Side Story” and “Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat”. This Society never drops its standard and this was another terrific success for Bridie Rowe and her entourage. Based on the film, the show follows Elle Woods (terrifically portrayed by Sammy Stringer) from jilted teenager to hopeful applying for a place at Law School.

The girls’ chorus who open the show were a terrific group of all American girls, with accents so authentic you would think they were from the USA. Perhaps at times the diction was lost and the music so loud you could not quite get the lyrics. The love of Sammy’s life, Warner Hartington III, played very sympathetically and in excellent voice by Sam Brown, decides not to continue with their romance. She is therefore persuaded to apply for a place at the local Law Academy. Here she meets with Emmett, played by Josh Day and a new romance begins.  For a most unlikely character to study the law, Elle finds great support in her endeavours from Professor Callahan (Jordon James).

The comical tour-de-force of Elle’s beautician pal Paulette Buonofuonte was played with perfect timing and intelligent characterisation by Livvy Campbell-Barr, who had the audience eating out of the palm of her hand while enjoy her hilarious performance of Ireland.

Praise must be given for this simple, yet effective, set; which transported us from Beverly Hills to Harvard in an instant.

The costumes were fantastic and so right for the all-American feel. The changes particularly in the second half were phenomenal.  Sammy Stringer played the lead part with great gusto both singing and dancing, bringing ‘Bend and Snap’ to this whole performance. It is quite amazing that Bridie can bring out such a performance of all these youngsters in their various roles. A brilliant show, well done to all involved.
