Legally Blonde

Wallasey Musical Theatre Company

15th August 2024

There was such excitement in the air at the Floral Pavilion Theatre New Brighton, in anticipation of the much-loved musical ‘Legally Blonde.’ performance from WMTC.

"Legally Blonde the Musical" is a high-energy, feel-good adaptation of the 2001 film. With a book by Heather Hach and music and lyrics by Laurence O'Keefe and Nell Benjamin, the musical offers a delightful blend of humour, heart, and empowerment, making it a must-see for fans of the original film and newcomers alike

The story follows Elle Woods, a sorority girl who enrols at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend, Warner. Along the way, and supported by her sorority friends, Margot, Serena, Kate and Pilar, she discovers her own intelligence and potential, challenging stereotypes and proving that being true to oneself is the ultimate key to success

Elle is played by the extremely talented Ciera Evans, delivering a stellar performance capturing Elle's bubbly personality and underlying determination perfectly. What a voice, Ciera has, absolutely flawless delivery, well done. Her portrayal is both charming and inspiring, bringing depth to a character that could easily be reduced to a stereotype. Director Jessica Martin had a strong cast, particularly the actors playing Emmett, (Jack Parry), an associate lawyer and Elle's eventual love interest, Warner, (Santino Apollonio) and Paulette, (Gabrielle Stanfield) Elle’s friend and salon owner, who I have to say gave a truly splendid performance, the chemistry with Kyle, the ‘hot’ postman (Stuart Wilson-Manor) who has such great stage presence, was a show highlight for me.

To me a live group of talented musicians is the heart of the musical. Praise to Craig Price, an experienced Musical Director for his creative direction as each musical piece not only entertains but also advances the plot, making for a seamless integration of story and song,

From the first moment the curtain opened the standard was set, we knew we were in for an amazing evening.  The stage came alive as Margot (Sophie Ellis-Kemp), Serena (Chole Ward), Kate (Lydia Foxley), and Pilar (Kaitlin Beecham), celebrate their friend’s expected engagement and dance exuberantly with the delightful Delta Nu sisters. The musical numbers are catchy and vibrant, with standout songs like "Omigod You Guys," "What You Want," and "Legally Blonde." The choreography is dynamic and well-executed, adding to the overall excitement and fun of the production. My admiration for Jessica Martin whose choreography of this show was exemplary, a joy to watch, very well done.

The set design is cleverly done, utilizing versatile pieces to create a variety of locations from the sunny California sorority house to the prestigious halls of Harvard. Congratulations to, Stage Manager Steve Dale and Deputy Helen Bennett for a seemingly flawless scene transition.  The costumes are bright, fashionable, and true to the characters, particularly Elle's iconic pink lawyer outfit, which brought cheers from the audience.

It's a large cast of 36 (38, if you include both of the audience’s favourite dogs, Bertie and Pablo), so I won't be able to mention everyone, but there were several roles within the show, where the actors involved really maximise and make it count. Jade Fazackerley plays fitness empress and accused murderer, Brooke Wyndham, (a sorority sister who Elle proves is not guilty) managing to sing the act two opening number ‘Whipped into Shape ‘whilst using a skipping rope throughout, and she never appears to miss a note!  A splendid performance. Sophie Ellis-Kemp (Margot) Jack Darker (Nikos), Antony Holden (Carlos) who were both hilarious; loved ‘Gay or European’ James Bennett (Dewey) Ruby Tuft (Enid) Gareth Earl (Professor Callahan). Loved the reference to ‘Trump’ ear injury… It was obvious to the audience that every single person on stage gave their all to this production, their happy smiling faces said it all, you were all wonderful

W.M.T.C. ‘Legally Blonde the Musical’ is a thoroughly enjoyable production that captures the spirit of the original film while adding its own musical flair. The humour and light heartedness are balanced with moments of genuine emotion, making the story relatable and impactful.  The audience on the night I attended loved every minute, leaving the Floral Pavilion New Brighton very happy indeed.

Thank you for inviting me, it was a privilege to see the cast backstage after the show. Looking forward to your next production.
