This was a new play published in 2016 and written by Lee Stewart. This black comedy thriller was set in the present and made an intriguing and interesting evening’s theatre.. The play in two acts opened to depict a solicitor’s office and Act 2 was set in a hotel bedroom. Well done to the set design team for the contrasting scenarios.
The six strong cast performed the dialogue with great pace and with very good projection. Only occasionally was the prompt required but this did not mar the overall action.
We, the audience soon felt part of what we thought was a simple will-reading by the solicitor played confidently by Rebecca Soper. The three Cullen brothers were hoping to receive a share of their recently deceased uncle’s will but were surprised and dismayed when this was not clear-cut.
Susie Owen as Kathy Cullen gave a spirited and convincing performance as the bitter and irate wife. During the course of the play, feelings and issues were brought to the surface and there were many twists and turns as the play progressed. The denouement was certainly unexpected as the audience had certainly not expected the very surprising ending.
The three brothers played by Steven Johnson, Jim Walker and Bill Reed were all contrasting characters who had interesting and very different backgrounds which led to discord and jealousy, whilst Viki Mason as Sally Cullen gently underplayed her role then surprised us all with her final scenes.
David Procter , Director and William Thomas, Producer must have enjoyed working on this new play and must be congratulated on the end result.
I feel that the programme would have benefitted from a bolder type -face as it was difficult to read, even with the house lights lit.
I always enjoy my visits to Ribchester and my wife and I would like to thank you for your warm welcome.
