It takes a society with guts to stage a production of a well loved television series, as the characters are so well known that the audience expectations are high. Bawtry Phoenix Theatre have guts, and this production of Last of the Summer Wine, was executed to perfection. It was a very well directed production and Steve Kellett, Director, must be justifiably proud of his show and cast.
The set made by Men in Sheds, was brilliant, and looked exactly like the front rooms everyone imagines with this title. I especially liked the serving hatch, where a lot of the action took place. The bookshelf also deserves a mention, which never failed to fall apart when needed.
The show was perfectly cast with Graham Hadley as Clegg, who, if you shut eyes, sounded just like Peter Sallis. Steve Adams was every inch the scruffy loveable rouge, Compo. His scene with Nora, played to loud mouth perfection by Sue Stevenson, where they his hand got stuck brought the house down. However, for me the performance of the night came from Bob Geeson as Foggy. Bob was excellent in this role. He landed every line, and every move was exactly what we, the audience, expect for this famous character. The trio was well supported by Will Wheatley (Flasher), Heather Wragg (Constance) and Jon Whiteley (Gifford).
Congratulations to all involved, I had a great evening and laughed all the way home.
