Spennymoor Youth Theatre Group’s concert, Last Dance, was an absolute joy from beginning to end: bright, fun, colourful and delivered with a confidence that reflected a great deal of care, commitment and rehearsal. This was a production full of warmth and celebration, and from the opening moments it was clear that the young performers had been extremely well prepared. The result was a polished and uplifting evening that showcased not only the talent within the group, but also the strong team working behind the scenes.

The concert had a particularly special significance as a farewell to Amy Gatland and Megs Defty, both long-serving members of the group. There was a real sense of affection and appreciation running through the evening, and the programme felt like a fitting tribute to their dedication, energy and contribution over the years. The celebratory nature of the event was beautifully judged, allowing the audience to enjoy an entertaining concert while also recognising an important moment in the group’s story.

With choreographer Megs Defty at the heart of the creative approach, it was no surprise that the evening had a strong dance focus. The choreography was energetic, varied and thoughtfully staged, giving the performers plenty of opportunity to shine. There was precision in the ensemble work, clear attention to spacing and formation, and an admirable sense of discipline throughout. The dancers performed with enthusiasm and assurance, and the movement sequences were not only entertaining but also impressively well rehearsed.  A particular highlight for me personally was the intricate tap number to “Red Right Hand” in Peaky Blinders style with the most stunning rhinestoned trousers and exceptionally complimentary lighting effects from Brightstar Light & Sound designed by Mark Turner.  Really incredible number performed by Megs and Amy.

The young cast should be congratulated on the professionalism they brought to the stage. Their commitment never wavered, and there was a lovely freshness and sparkle to the performances. They looked as though they were enjoying every moment, and that enjoyment carried across to the audience. The confidence, smiles and focus on display were a credit to the group and to the rehearsal process that had clearly gone into preparing the concert.  I did especially love “Let’s Get Ready to Rumble” performed with an absolute zest by the juniors with soloists Finlay Johnson and Jonah Ranyard.  Every one of those wonderful children on stage were absolutely excellent and well supported in their performance by the behind the scenes team, costume, colour, technical support and audience enthusiasm.  The entire cast were superstars with multiple solos, duets and trios showcasing the incredible work this does in the community for young people.  I also particularly liked the BSL interpreted version of “Sing” performed by the whole company but ensuring the young lady interpreting was showcased in making theatre more accessible for all.

Lou Defty’s production was professionally presented and full of colour and pace. The concert moved smoothly from one number to the next, maintaining energy and variety while allowing each section to make its own impact. The overall staging had a bright and vibrant quality, and the production values gave the evening a polished finish. It was evident that much thought had gone into creating a concert that felt both heartfelt and highly entertaining.

Last Dance was a thoroughly enjoyable albeit hot evening, and Spennymoor Youth Theatre Group can be very proud of what they achieved. It was an excellent concert: well rehearsed, polished, colourful and full of life. As a farewell to Amy Gatland and Megs Defty, it was both touching and celebratory, and it stood as a wonderful reminder of the talent, friendship and dedication that make youth theatre so special. Congratulations to everyone involved on a superb production.
