This was a well directed, fast paced updated version of this classic musical with some very slick and well executed choreography.
Philippa Mills and Tom Fletcher were both in fine voice as Kate and Fred moving seamlessly between their everyday characters and their Shakespearian roles. The same was true of Lauren Key and Maison Kelly. They both brought a lot of energy to their characters as the flirty Lois and unsuccessful gambler Bill.
Steph Coleman (Hattie) together with the company got the performance off to an energetic start with an excellent rendering of ‘Another Op’nin’, Another Show. The lead in ‘Too Darn Hot’ was in the very capable hands of Bea Coleman as Paul who also combined very effectively with David Walters (Gremio) and James Mateo-Salt (Hortensio) in a well structured rendering of ‘Tom, Dick or Harry’.
Craig Smith and Carl Banks as the two gangsters extracted every bit of possible humour from their characters. There was strong support from Chris Wolverson (Baptista), Simon Docherty (Harrison), Craig Griffiths (Stage Doorman) and a nicely balanced orchestra
The singing from principals and chorus was first class throughout and this together with very slick dancing gave an evening’s entertainment of which the production team should be justifiably proud. Well done to everyone!
