This award winning society has seen a few changes of cast members since their previous shows and I am very pleased to say that in my opinion the company’s high standards has been maintained. In this well cast production Lilli Vanessi/Katharine Minola was played superbly by Julie Waite who had just the right amount of fight and spunk to bring every scene to life. She stood up to and fought like a vixen with Fred Graham/Petruchio played brilliantly by Tim Kimber another new member of the society. His interpretation of the part was masterly in every respect. I have seen both these performers before but these parts gave them both the best opportunity to show their remarkable acting skills. Becky Edmonds as Lois Lane and Ben Michael as Bill Calhoun both gave excellent performances and we saw a very different side to Mark Barnes as General Harrison Howell. This was a small but very important part which he portrayed to perfection. The first and second gangster were played with great enthusiasm and humour by Mark Roberts and Bruce Stewart helping to make this production one of the best shows I have seen this year. Their version of ‘Brush up your Shakespeare’ was in a league of its own. With a large supporting cast and chorus members who all wore super costumes, sang and danced well throughout, this show was a sure fire winner. I loved the directors setting, the choreography in the principals and chorus numbers and the orchestra who were well balanced and did not overpower in any of the musical numbers as can often be the case. Societies are only as good as their last production; LMCS should be congratulated on ‘Kiss me Kate’. I am pleased to say there were many positive comments overheard as the audience left the theatre.
