Kinky Boots is originally a 2005 British film based on a true story, with the stage musical adaptation debut on Broadway in 2013. Written by Harvey Fierstein with music and Lyrics by Cyndi Lauper, the story is about a struggling shoe factory’s young straightlaced owner who forms an unlikely partnership with a drag queen to save the family business. As the show opens, we are transported into the factory of Price and Sons where son Charlie Price is left running the business following the sudden death of his father. From the beginning of the show, we were transported to a high energy production where music, drama and dance came together to tell the story of emotion, vulnerability, and most of all friendship. Charlie, played by Steven Struthers gave an excellent performance with his strength in vocals in equal measure with his acting. Lola, played by John-Ross Weir while a complete contrast in role gave an equally outstanding performance. ‘Not My Father’s Son’ near the end of Act 1 was delivered with high emotion and was a highlight of the show, along with Lola’s delivery of ‘Hold Me In Your heart’.  There were many characters in the show who all brought their talents to the production. We saw the contrast between the more serious Nicola played by Emily Southwood, and Lauren played by Sophie Lamont the factory girl in love with Charlie, who both gave strong and convincing performances. The roles of the young Charlie and Lola were played well, and we saw the feelings and emotions of the two main characters shine through at an early stage in the show.

The talent of Lola’s Angels was evident, and their performances were strong.  Make up, costume and style being such an important part of the Angels, they all looked fabulous and moved with great ease in their heels. The choreography of the entire company created by Lynne Bustard, was slick and energetic throughout the production. All principal characters in the show were convincing and well-cast and there was light and shade throughout the show, displaying a range of emotions. Musically this was a tight performance with excellent singing and playing under the music direction of Alistair Peter. Roy McGregor brought us a stylish production, and overall the audience witnessed an excellent show.
