This was another visit to the Ribble Valley to see the 2017 Production by the youth section of R.A.T.S. and what a delightful evening it turned out to be. This was a show written by Connor Nutter, and Paul Bell who brought the life of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table to life, in this very amusing, imaginative and innovative interpretation of the story. The three Directors, Paul, Connor and Lewis Reed had obviously worked tirelessly with the young cast to produce an excellent, entertaining, performance.

I enjoyed the opening scene where all the characters attempted to retrieve “Excalibur” from The Stone, showing a variety of great facial expressions and body language.

The whole story revolves around King Arthur’s early monarchy and the trials and tribulations he encountered.

King Arthur was played by a confident and composed Nell Johnson who looked completely at home on the stage and I enjoyed the very funny cameo role of Sir Lionel played by Laura Nickson. Charlie Hinkley gave an outstanding, mature and hilarious performance as Merlin The Magician, whose facial expressions and total demeanour was just what the characterization required. I was particularly impressed with the expressive use of his hands, very often overlooked by many actors. (He also coped so well with a “ wayward beard”)

Sam Soper as Sir Mordred once again demonstrated his considerable natural talents as he immersed himself completely in the role of the villain of the piece. He was completely unfazed by the boos and jeers from the audience and revelled in swooping about the stage in his voluminous black cape. He used this to great effect in the well choreographed dance, to a Michael Jackson sound track. (I believe “Dance” runs in the family?)

The whole of the cast were obviously enjoying themselves as they acted, sang and danced through the evening. I must congratulate Frances Lamburn whose choreography ensured the pace of the piece never faltered.

A simple set and bright costumes, all enhanced by the lighting crew, together with some very lively numbers ensured the audience had a very enjoyable experience. Congratulations to all involved. I never cease to be impressed by this Company and I look forward to my every visit.
