The success of this show depends mainly on the portrayal of the two main characters, The King and Anna Leonowens. Graeme Clements as the King dominated the stage throughout showing great presence but also good awareness of others around him. He has to be dynamic, charismatic but at times a little naive. His dialogue was always in character showing well the various aspects of his part but particularly good in the scenes with Anna. Alexandra Maclean as Anna Leonowens started nervously but as the evening progressed she improved greatly. Her diction and expression was excellent during dialogue but singing at times lacked strength. The two younger principals of the cast Ewan Wharton as Louie and Elliot Swann as Prince Chululongkorn both acted well throughout. There were good supporting performances from the other principals especially from Lady Thiang, Sue Rourke, showing good facial expression and body language and always staying in character. Special mention of the King’s children especially the very young ones. Interesting choreography in the Ballet (Small House of Uncle Thomas) with some very good individual dances and narrated well by Kelly Fuller as Tuptim. An excellent overall production directed by Ben Lister!
