This successful play written by Sean O`Casey, takes place in the Dublin slums in 1922. The author based it upon his own experiences of the turbulent years that led to an independent Irish republic. This was a masterful production, well directed by Niamh, with evocative performances from Jenny Cooper as Juno, who with an indomitable will to keep her family together, no matter what, delivered a memorable feisty portrayal. Equally, Mike Asprey as “Captain Jack” - the Paycock - played the role of master of the house with roguish impudent reliance on his ailments to avoid work, giving a superb performance, extracting every bit of humour with perfect comic timing. An art that is rare in amateur theatre.
Rick Law as “ Joxer”, the ne`er do well friend of Jack gave a great rendition of faking friendship to gain whatever he could as a fairweather friend. Top rate acting. I liked Janet Townes as the neighbour Maisie Madigan, nosey and liking to know everything that went on in their locality, but still proving a good friend to Juno. A well studied performance. The whole of the cast deserve great acclaim for the way the piece maintained its tempo and all kept their Irish accents believable throughout. A moving, at times most humerous, and honest scenario kept the audience engaged throughout, great entertainment.
