This retelling of the biblical story about Joseph, his eleven brothers and the coat of many colours was fantastic fun and was the perfect experience for theatre goers. Ilkley Upstagers Theatre Group are a hugely talented company and I was privileged to attend their dress rehearsal.
Joseph (Dexter Riley) was perfect in the leading role as Joseph – he sang his musical numbers with ease and with beautiful sensitivity.
The role of the narrator was brilliantly sung by Ruby Hendry, and she had some lovely “interactive” moments with the rest of the cast – particularly with the choir.
Bradley Johnson as Pharaoh gave us a wonderful Elvis-style impersonation – so full of fun!
The principals were all excellent and the ensemble (choir) numbers were superbly sung and staged, with the young children sitting in rows of tiered seating to the side of the front of the stage.
Paul’s choreography was imaginative and slick throughout. I particularly loved the “mega mix” at the end of the show.
The overall production was first class and the Director/Choreographer (Paul Nowland) and Musical Director (Phil Walsh) should be ecstatic with the result. This was a visually stunning show, spectacular in every sense of the word, particularly due to the richness of the costume design and the massively impressive set.
The lighting & sound, enhanced the overall excellence of the show.
Massive congratulations to everyone involved!
