This was a Youth Section Production
A change of venue to Eastwood Theatre within District 4 brought me a kind invitation from Susan B Russell to visit the Group’s production of this popular show. Presented on a single set with essential differences in height levels provided by staircases on each side and the use of projected backgrounds and dramatic lighting, the show proceeded seamlessly through the numerous scenes. The audience was guided through the story by the two narrators played confidently by Ellen Graham and Claire Mary Taggart. Regan Burke with his assured presence and beautifully articulated voice was a joy to see and hear in the role of Joseph, the highlight for me being the prison scene with Joseph and the Children and the haunting number “Close every Door”. Ross Moynihan took the role of Jacob with Connor Burnett as Reuben and Matthew McCallion as Simeon and they with their wives, the children, the narrators and the other ten brothers set the scene with Jacob in the opening narrative and first few numbers. Liam McGrath took the double role as the brother Isaacher and the wealthy Potipher with Mairead Dunsmore as the seductive Mrs Potipher. Catherine Taggart provided a graceful performance as the solo dancer.
The remainder of the cast comprised the Chorus of Wives, Backing Singers and the Senior Choir with a sizeable Children’s Chorus. Movement of the large and varied cast around the set showed precision in rehearsal and the same can be said of all of the vocals which were delivered with such clarity. Everyone remained in character and I saw no lapses of concentration. This was a show of extremely high standard onstage and backstage, rounded off by a lively band of musicians.
