Not only was the dream coat ‘amazing’ so too were all the youngsters in this production. An enthusiastic and well-honed cast conveyed the biblical tale of Joseph and his brothers who, jealous of his favoured status and dream forecasts sell him into slavery. The narrator burst on to the scene with her Prologue and by the time Joseph and chorus had performed the second song Any Dream Will Do the audience was hooked. In her role as Narrator, taking us through Joseph’s trials, Daisy Mackie revealed maturity and understanding of her role and impressed with her clear pure voice. She made it seem effortless. Likewise, as principal Joseph, Kyle Haston took the role to heart and led us through with his powerful character and singing which carried all before him-the bewilderment, the pain, integrity and forgiveness. Alistair Oag as Potiphar swaggered his character across the stage, exuding position and power, while Mrs Potiphar played by Alana Robertson, showed effectively how one spurned can react so spitefully. Building on his previous roles, Alexander Gavin gave us an assured Elvis type character rocked by strange dreams. The eleven brothers were as one in their cruel treatment of Joseph with Paul Macdonald as Reuben and Annie Knox as Benjamin nailing their roles. All the youngsters performed their parts amazingly and moved with confidence. Their combined singing of the now well-known songs was moving and spine-tingling. The production was colourful with the cast costumed appropriately in a rainbow of colours. The scenery was minimal but illustrated the pyramids and set the show in context. Later the Pharaoh’s head with its working mouth complemented the size of the Pharaoh’s power. Then in the finale, the arc of rainbow colours framing Joseph summed up the show. All in all, this was a well sung and acted production of which all, on stage and off, can be justly proud.
