When a show has been around for more than 50 years, and still creates a buzz around the auditorium, you know it’s a winner. Bawtry Phoenix Theatre Young Players took to the stage with the fabulous, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Since joining NODA two years ago, it has been my honour to see this group go from strength to strength, and to see the growth and maturity in these young performers. Director, Jonah Thompson, needs to be congratulated on not only a great production, but for the time he has invested in these performers. The stage is not the biggest in the world, but Emma Spencer, Choreographer, created high energy, modern, and engaging routines which was suitable for all abilities. Joseph is a sung thru musical and Alan Cropley, Musical Director, had obviously worked hard with the cast and helped them build up their stamina for such a production.
The title role of Joseph was played by Thomas Wood. Thomas looked every inch the Joseph we have in our minds, and treated us to some wonderful vocals. Rohan Smith, Pharaoh, delighted audiences with his Elvis inspired routine which was a delight. The role of the Narrator was shared between 4 cast members, with each one becoming the others backing. Alice Frogson, Beth Stroughair, Tia French and Louise Singleton worked as a team, and this made for some great moments.
The brothers all worked well together, but I must mention Oliver Wood, who played Zebulum. Oliver never stopped acting once and his rendition of the usually depressing Cannon Days, was the song of the night.
Tina Witherden, Wardrobe Mistress, had created the most amazing Dreamcoat, with a cape that filled the stage, and was a feast for the eyes. Infact, all the costumes in this production were fabulous. Well done Tina.
Many thanks to all at Bawtry Phoenix Theatre Young Players. For me, this was your best yet.
