One word sums up, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat by RTSA, PERFECTION.
Having seen Joseph countless and times, played Potiphar once, Pharaoh once and Joseph himself 5 times, I thought no one could make Joseph different from any other production I’d seen. However, I didn’t count on the theatrical genius that is Dee Bennie - Marshall getting her hands on this show. Dee has created a production which is new, fresh and modern. You would never think that this show is 50 years old. It was as if it was composed and created last week.
Of course, Joseph is a sung thru musical, and requires a good MD. RTSA didn’t have a good MD, they had an exceptional one. Matthew Symonds managed to get a sound out of these young performers that some adult societies wouldn’t be able to get. The harmonies were spot on and a delight to listen too.
Dan Fenwick played the title role of Joseph and what a performance. He lit up the stage every time he appeared and sang all his songs to perfection. Kieron Richardson as Pharaoh gave us a very good Elvis impersonation, which brought the house down. Oliver Fells as Jacob gave us the most entertaining portrayal of Jacob I have ever seen and was fully committed to the character. In the minor role of Potiphar, Jack Lockley was hysterical. A great example of being on stage for two minutes and owning it. Gracie Molly also excelled as Mrs Potiphar. Joseph’s brothers had been cast perfectly and had really good chemistry with each other. My favourite number of theirs were ‘Those Canaan Days’ where Caleb Somerville showed off his impressive vocals.
Now, as you are all aware, Joseph requires a Narrator, who tells the story to us, the audience. Chloe Jackson, step forward and bow, bow and bow again. This was a phenomenal performance. Not only did Chloe sing her way thru this entire show, she also danced her way thru it, doing triple pirouette without missing one word. Stunning.
From the set, to the orchestra, the lights, to the fabulous costumes, well done Kath Wall, that was one amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, this production is simply flawless, and my favourite RTSA show to-date. Here’s to A Chorus Line.
