Tomorrow’s stars have to start somewhere today; there were certainly future musical stars in-the-making at this charming production of the popular biblical-based musical. Though tentative at first, the cast gained confidence as the show progressed and delivered an entertaining and engaging evening’s singing and acting, accompanied by a live band who played their parts encouragingly. The stage performers ranged from self-conscious (and timid) newcomers to experienced and confident leads (special mention for James Metcalf (Joseph) James Archer (Pharaoh) as well as the narrators). Some voices were hard to hear but that could be down to inexperience, nerves or selective miking; but it didn’t detract from performances. And much praise must go to the adults who made it all happen: from the chaperones, through costumes and set, to the organisers of the event and those in charge. Amateur musical theatre has a lot to be thankful for in bringing forward out artistes of the future.
