“Joking Apart” is by Alan Ayckbourn and, according to notes in the programme, is one of his favourite plays. It is one of his darker comedies with a focus on jealousy and envy. At its centre, one couple, Richard and Anthea, who are the envy of their friends as they appear to have everything for the perfect life. The action spreads over 12 years' seasons and celebrations: Bonfire Night, Christmas, Summer and finally Debbie’s 18th birthday (Anthea’s daughter).
The set was excellent and had been well crafted portraying the exterior of the house, garden and part of the tennis court. There was great attention to detail.
A great deal of trouble had also gone into ensuring each character was appropriately dressed and made up immaculately.
The lighting was effective and imaginative; the combination of lighting and sound for the fireworks effect was spectacular and well executed.
The essential characterisations of each cast member was well developed and each character maintained their persona throughout. Timing and pace are vital in this play which got off to a slow start, but the action picked up once the alcohol got flowing. Jo Long provided much of the humour as Louise, wife of the vicar who had lost his faith, as drink reacted with her medication. Peter Francis was on top form as host Richard and Steve Oakley maintained a convincing Finnish accent throughout, as Sven.
Thanks to the talented and hard-working team, led by Director, Amanda Pennington (who also took the role of Brian), and Production Manager, Kevin Gillard, the audience enjoyed an entertaining evening of pathos and humour.
