The concert version of Jesus Christ Superstar proved to be a powerful and visually engaging production, brimming with dramatic intensity and musical prowess. The sheer vocal projection from the cast commanded attention, though at times, the orchestra’s intensity made some moments harder to hear clearly.

The staging was simple, dynamic and immersive, with performers utilising every possible entrance and exit within the venue. This clever use of space kept the audience visually engaged, ensuring that no moment felt static or predictable. Each character remained fully in role throughout, delivering performances that felt deeply authentic and committed.

A standout of the night was Rachel Burnett in the role of Jesus. Her vocal power and conviction were remarkable, effortlessly carrying those soaring top notes with clarity and control. “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” was a particular highlight—beautifully sung with a delicate balance of emotion and restraint, never overacted or exaggerated. The piece detailing Jesus’ trials and tribulations was equally striking, a poignant and powerful moment in the show’s narrative.

George Aldridge brought an excellent comedic touch to his portrayal of Herod. His vocals were solid, and his natural flair for timing enhanced his performance, with a particularly enjoyable tap sequence alongside the musical director that added a playful, unexpected charm.

Of course, the climactic number, Jesus Christ Superstar, was delivered with immense energy and vocal strength from the entire cast. It was a commanding moment, though the ever-present challenge remained—the orchestra, despite its brilliance, occasionally overwhelmed the vocals, reducing the impact of some of the performers' efforts.

Despite this minor sound balance issue, the production delivered an engaging and emotionally charged experience. With purposeful costume choices supporting the creative intent and a cast fully committed to their roles, this concert version captured the essence of Jesus Christ Superstar with spirit and passion.

Thank you once again to the University of Manchester Musical Theatre Society for your warm welcome and hospitality.
