By any standards this was an impressive piece of theatre and a credit to the production team including the technical staff. The set was well used by the director and cast and the lighting of it was amazing.
This show, although fairly short in length, is a big sing particularly for the characters of Jesus and Judas. Phil Bourn and Eoin Edwards in the roles were certainly up to the task and gave very strong performances both in acting and singing. Victoria Beck (Mary) gave a very powerful performance as she struggled with her relationship with Jesus. I always think that a society is lucky if they have a member capable singing the role of Caiaphas but Lichfield found theirs in Mark Johnson and he was well supported by James Pugh (Annas). Dan Anketell was hilarious as King Herod in the slickly choreographed ‘King Herod’s Song’. Pete Beck showed what a singer and performer he is as Pilate in the trial scene.
In addition to all this were several ensembles and a confident chorus. The Apostles were led by Michael Manser (Peter) and Patrick Jervis (Simon). There was strong support from the Priests, Apostle Women, Lepers, Reporters, Peter’s Denial Soloists and the Soul Girls. Most of these featured solos and well balanced ensemble singing. Well done to you all.
There was some very innovative choreography and it was superbly executed throughout.
The production was well supported by an excellent orchestra although, at times, they made it difficult to hear the words of some of the principals.
This was an excellent evening’s entertainment and congratulations to everyone involved!
