Jesus Christ Superstar made its Broadway debut almost 45 years ago and its powerful message as told through the eyes of Judas is as fresh today as it was in 1971. Teesside MTC’s version of this Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice rock opera wow’ed the highly appreciative audience as they realised they were experiencing something special.

The three main characters of Jesus, Mary Magdelene and Judas were more than adequately filled by Steven Dunn, Hannah Smith and Dave Waller - each a great contrast to the others as they individually and collectively shone, both vocally and dramatically, throughout. The emotions on display in their acting was palpable. Steven’s ‘despair’ in the classic song ‘Gethsemane’ was great theatre and a privilege to witness. Dave’s turmoil of decision as he realised his actions were destined to send Jesus to death were personified in ‘Blood Money’. Hannah meanwhile showed great empathy for her character in both the numbers ‘I don’t know how to Love him’ and ‘Could we start again please’ (my personal favourite of the whole production.)

The priests, led by Steve Catchpole as Caiaphas and Mike Harbisher as Annas, showed the anxiety of their power base eroding and portrayed their ruthless nature in exemplary fashion. Simon Dale as Pilate and Allan Iveson as Herod were superb in their respective roles as they condemned Jesus to death. Impressively leading the 12 disciples with great vocals were Peter and Simon (played by Daniel Matuszak and James Bearpark respectively).

With over 60 characters and chorus on stage it is difficult to mention everyone but the emotion from the ensemble was superb from start to finish as well as the stage movement and great choreography by Nic. Orchestra was well controlled by John in such a heavy music driven production. Lighting was atmospheric and enhanced by the animated back projected ‘scenes’ – a feature that always impresses with TMTC productions. Chorus singing was excellent and a testament to the hard work that must have gone into rehearsal (with a special mention to their chorus master Mike Harbisher and Nicola Tayler as accompanist). Set, with realistic floor colouring although simple, was very versatile and lent itself very well to the production.
However, the biggest mention must go to Alison as stage director for her vision in creating a spectacle that will live long in the memory of those that saw this production.
Massive well done to TMTC.
