Jesus Christ Superstar

Our performance was the second night of MOS’s run of this famous musical.  The auditorium, the pews of Holy Trinity Church, was buzzing with a full audience. The church environment was welcoming, beautiful, bright and light.  Hadleigh Matthews, Musical Director, and his musicians were already in position, furthest away in the chancel, at the back of what was to be the main performance area.  

The audience immediately hushed as the familiar music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice started to play.  From the very start the company gave their all, the energy level of everyone was immediately impactful.  Initially, I had real concerns that the orchestra would overwhelm the singers, but as if by magic it settled into a wonderful marriage.  I’m guessing minor adjustments, both in audience perception and maybe other controls had magicked an excellent balance.   

James Smith, playing Jesus, was convincing in his portrayal. He seemed calm, and considered and never overstated. Oh my word - he had an exquisite vocal range!   Liam Brown, playing Peter, gave an excellent portrayal of confusion, and quiet anger. Judas, by Drayson Goldfinch, was solid.  I must also mention the excellent performance by Stuart Clements as Pontius Pilot.  In fact there were no apparent weaknesses in any performances.    The ladies of the cast were super too, Abby Mitchell’s solo as Mary Magdalane was particularly notable.   Everyone was fully engaged in performance, so Director Neil Paterson, and his assistant Donna Clements should feel very proud.    Finally, regarding performance, every participant, gave their all. Brya Porter’s choreography was admirable. Hadleigh Matthews - Musical Director and Vocal Coach, Jasmin Brooks  must be feeling very happy with the clarity and performances they helped fashioned.  Of course without a dedicated Production Team shows of quality would not come to fruition.   Thank you all.
