I am sure that amongst the older generation, the story of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde conjures up a black and white film with the smart gentleman, Dr Jekyll swallowing a ghastly potion and transforming into the hideous hairy creature known as Mr Hyde! Well, all those memories were whisked away by LIDOS's memorable musical of this story - here we had a tormented doctor, experimenting on himself in a kind of schizophrenic episode and becoming the infamous Hyde. LIDOS must be proud to have produced a musical of this high calibre - Sensitively directed by Sian Lomax, who had obviously spent a lot of time developing her vision and flow of the production, she left her audience in no doubt of the unfolding story. The Musical Director, Lucy Eyre, as always, handled the tricky score with professionalism and had guided the cast through the music with flair. Choreography was also in the safe hands of Emma Tempest and Donna Wells - some really stunning ensemble movement that suited the cast, exciting to watch. We had a tour de force performance by Robert Stott as the Jekyll/Hyde character, with excellent singing and acting - the stand-out musical number, 'This is My Moment' was truly amazing - and no prosthetics here, he changed character by a mere sweep of his hair! A strong line-up of principals gave Robert good suport - Laura Ferrin (Jekyll's fiancee,Emma), Harriet Chaplin (Hyde's mistress), Matthew Jackson (John Utterson), Rory Mulvilhill (Sir Danvers) and all other principals were excellent - not one weak link here. The ensemble all had individual characters to play and this added to the professionalism of the production. I must congratulate the Technical Team, under the direction of Paul Harding - I often feel sorry for these brave folk - the actors get months of rehearsal but the 'techies' only get one or two rehearsals - but the set changes were slick and quick- Marvellous!!
Sound and and lighting were superb, props (so many!!) costumes and make-up authentic (just a little note for costume - some accessories were needed for the ladies, especially for a period production).
I have nothing but admiration for LIDOS, who over the years, have developed into a very strong musical group and I feel this because the people who run the society are commited to theatre. That is what it's all about! I can't wait to see what they make of their next production, 'Rent'! My heartfelt congratulations to you all!
