Well, the stage was set for what was to be a journey into the darkness of ones mind when Dr. Jekyll begins a series of experiments to try and separate good and evil. Phil McIntosh certainly got into the dual characters of Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Edward Hyde. His portrayal and the energy that he brought to the part was excellent , not to be outmatched by his singing voice. I especially liked the way he worked the experiment ‘This is the Moment’ before taking his formula ‘The Transformation’ when Hyde is finally released ‘Alive’.

He was well supported by his fiancé Emma Carew beautifully played by Michele Larcombe. Her voice was delightful when she sang ‘Once Upon a Dream’. The other lady in his life was Lucy, one of the Red Rat Club dancers played by Louise Marshall. They both gave a lovely performance when they sang ‘In His Eyes’. The part of Lucy is a demanding role, playing the part of a prostitute with the rest of the Red Rat Girls, singing ‘Bring on the Men’, then Lucy and Hyde gave a very strong performance when they sang ‘Dangerous Game’.

Jekyll was well supported by his friend John Utterson played by Ben Merriman. Both him and Sir Danvers Carew played by Chris Warby did a very good job of telling the story.

All the Board of Governors were well played each getting what they deserved in the end. They were superbly supported by the Company who gave very sharp and crisp performances of ‘Façade’ and  ‘Murder Murder’. There were lovely little cameo roles of Nellie played by Rachel Craig, Spider played by Craig Brown and the Priest played by Wayne Buckley.

Steve Carrick had done a very good job on the production side of things. The chorus had been involved and used throughout the show and everything moved along at a good pace. The choreography was in the capable hands of Sally McKimm. The Red Rat Club ladies must be congratulated on their performances, they were deliciously dirty and Paul Blake as Musical Director must have been very pleased with the whole production.

The set by Scenic Projects worked very well and back stage members must be congratulated on the seamless change of sets which culminated in a really fantastic show.

Well done and thank you.
