Over recent years, the company has presented new shows with challenging music and drama and the choice of this dark musical thriller based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel, ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’, proved to be another great success.  Playing the hugely demanding title role, Matthew Coulter brilliantly commanded the stage throughout adeptly characterising the continuously inquiring Dr Jekyll and his transformation to Mr Hyde.  Rachael Totten was well cast as the faithful and accepting Emma Carew, Jekyll’s fiancé, as was Angela Ball, the feisty prostitute Lucy Harris, who Hyde eventually murders.  Iain Campbell provided a great performance as John Utterson, Jekyll’s lawyer and friend, as did Andrew McKenna (Simon Stride) Secretary to the Board of Governors and Jekyll’s rival for Emma’s affection and also Joe Totten (Sir Danvers) Emma’s father and Chairman of the Board of Governors.  Although many of the musical numbers are not so well known, this great score provided many solos, duets and ensembles which the principals and members of the chorus delivered with great confidence and passion to inform and complement the story.  The group again showcased an abundance of talent which exists within the local community and all involved in this production should be extremely delighted with the end result.  A thoroughly enjoyable production!
