Jack off the Beanstalk is a hilariously funny alternative to Jack and the Beanstalk. With a small cast of seven actors and no big set the Bonkers Playhouse Theatre was a perfect and intimate venue for a production like this. The storyline was in keeping with the well-known pantomime but was one for the older theatre goer and had plenty of audience participation too. Barbara Hockey who is well-known locally as a musical director has had a hand in the music for this but also made her directing debut too. Barbara’s direction was excellent, the casting was superb, the staging was very good and the action was fast-paced. Well done to Dan and Martin for the super sound and music mixing! The cast of actors was excellent. Daniel Fortune was outstanding in the title role of Jack, his exuberance was infectious and his comic timing was perfect. Stephen Cox was outrageously funny as Dame Trott and had a great rapport with the audience. Martin Brown was hilarious as the evil character Fleshlight and kept us booing and hissing all night. Adele Jamookeeah was suitably nasty and a bit creepy as the female giant, The Vagiant and also received plenty of boos from us all. Kimberley Hollis provided lots of charm and beauty in the role of Princess Jil. Alice Lupton gave us silent comedy as Fist the Cow who was sold for a bag of beans. Susan Hackett was hilarious as the giddy and inept Fairy Hanny. Well done to you all, you kept the audience laughing throughout the evening. The costumes and makeup were all very good. The lighting and sound quality was excellent throughout the show. Congratulations to all at Theats for a perfect opening night that kept the audience thoroughly entertained.
