This version of the traditional pantomime was written by club stalwarts, husband and wife, Trevor and Caroline Nicol. Trevor’s script was full of witty one-liners and local references supported by Caroline’s clever lyrics to songs ranging from Kurt Weill’s “Mack the Knife” to Sondheim’s “Not While I’m Around” to “Holding Out For a Hero” from Footloose. Jack Trott (Aileen Hendry) was a very good Principal Boy, coping admirably with the Beanstalk when it refused to be felled, and made a delightful couple along with Jill (Emma Nairne). Comedy was in the safe hands of Dame Tilly Trott (Nicholas Nicol) and her other son, Simple Simon (Morag Barron). Dame Trott’s facial expressions and Simon’s cheeky manner had the audience in stitches. Fleshcreep, the Giant’s henchman (Trevor Nicol) was the consummate baddie eliciting boos and hisses at every entrance and exit. However Fairy Bo-Peep (Fiona McDonald) was his equal, using her goodness and magic to counter his every evil action. Strong support was given by Brian Howlett (Lord Elpus, Dame Trott’s love interest), Anne Bamborough (Melody the Harp), Hannah Nimmo (Gussie the Goose), Jimmy McNaughton (Blunderbore the Giant) and Carla Kelly and Kara Mackenzie (Buttercup the Cow). The chorus and principals alike sang and danced well. Costumes were bright and appropriate to the characters and the sets simple and colourful – all one could ask from pantomime. Well done to all at The Florians – on and off stage – for another wonderful evening’s entertainment!
