A new script of this pantomime by Alan McHugh was Harlequin’s choice for this season’s show and it proved to be a real treat. An excited buzz from the Brownies, Guides and Cubs in the auditorium anticipated the striking opening of the show by Superfly (Joseph Cameron) and the chorus. Set in the village of Retropolis, the scary Giant eats all the livestock but the Villagers set out to save their cow Moo Moo (a classical beast played jointly by Lorna Wyllie and Kirsten Mclean) by taking her to market – and that leads to other adventures! Georgina Stephen played a dainty Firefly and Max Yuill played an excellent and athletic Dame (Marge), ably supported by the comedy characters Archie (Charlie Dexter) and Jack (Jack McNeilage) with much hilarity and fun. Iman Akhtar took the role of the attractive and charming Princess with Iain Shearer taking the part of the King with Katy Carey giving an excellent and notable performance as the Queen. An impressive, well choreographed and lively chorus of villagers – some thirty girls and around twenty boys completed the cast and I remain convinced that the production team ensures that projection and clarity of diction is rehearsed into the group’s shows as I seldom miss hearing the words of the dialogue and songs. The discipline in the large chorus and the focus of attention of individuals throughout is impressive.
The music included interesting excerpts from well-known current and recent hits and scenery and props deserve a special mention for the “inflatable” beanstalk and the working Giant (voice by Sands Stirling). Irrespective of the new script and setting, all the ingredients of the traditional pantomime were there for the audience to enjoy.
