The script by Ben Croker kept to the traditional story and some well-drawn characters in a strong story-line and the directorial team led by Caroline Foot exploited and capitalised on this with a well-cast and well-rehearsed production.
The two ‘opposing powers’ of good and evil were very strong in character and style and truly exploited their every move and word, good voices, loved the ‘different’ costumes of the Eco Fairy (Nicola Kum) and Slimeball (Mark Robinson): just remember the traditions in future of ‘good from SR and bad from SL (the sinister side)', as the scene is set by these two.
A feisty long-legged Jack from Emma Patrick matched up well with a delightful Princess from Charlie Wilson, good voices and numbers as well as a good rapport.
The Court represented well by the overbearing King Bertram of Phil Pearson who delivered his lines with great strength and clarity and timing, and the rather stupid and inept (but well-meaning) Flunkit of Liz Staight, a good duo to add to story and comedy.
And the link to the audience well maintained with smiles and comedy and with laughter, plus being the fall-guy to the Dame, Simple Simon from Jade Balmer was good in this role.
As Dame Madonna Trot, Tim Lovejoy had the looks and costumes, the easy repartee with the audience, the rapport and interaction with all the cast, good timing and delivery, the comedy, definitely a very good dame-role.
One should not forget the all important Daisy the Cow of black and white spots, loved by the youngsters, and executed in style by Bobbie-Jo Wilson and Chloe Robinson. Or indeed ignore the villain of the piece, Blunderbore the Giant with Stuart Wright inside that costume.
Above all though, it was the Company that gave a huge energy level of song and dance, obviously well-rehearsed and executed with enthusiasm and enjoyment. Sitting on the front row, I was very aware of the commitment and projected vocal skills, particularly of the young chorus of elves and imps, great for the future.
Must congratulate the ‘band’ led by Jon Settle for some great live music which set up the audience into a mood of anticipation and enjoyment.
