This was a greatly entertaining panto – Oh yes it was! With a good story line, enlivened by well-chosen songs and set off by colourful costumes and set, the principals built on their experiences of previous shows and played with confidence. Kirsten Miller carried off the comic part of Dame Dotty Dimple with ease. Her timing and delivery engaged her audience and ensured laughter all round. Likewise Esme Weir as Simple Simon caught and held her audience and was so unfazed by the inability of her audience to remember her long catch line that she made a virtue of it. Well matched in singing and acting were the leads - Jack played by Carla Reid and Princess Primrose played by Emma Byrne. Often leading panto roles can be a bit bland but not here as they mined their roles to find strength of character and create a real rapport. Experienced hands Hannah Johnston as Piccallili and Celine Beveridge as Rancid carved out their own evil roles with relish. Newer to principal roles were Kieran West as the naive King Hubert, Ellie Marshall as Queen Hyacinth, his long suffering wife, Torin McFedries as Hubert the Town Crier of the silver tongued delivery, and Maree Yu as the graceful Fairy Sugardust . All demonstrated talent and confidence that augurs well for the future. Not to be outdone were the hapless pair Scarper and Snatchet, namely Ramsay Reynolds and Conall McFedries , who lived up to their names in word and deed. All were supported by a chorus that kept its character throughout and by a marvellous team of dancers. Particularly engaging scenes were the slapstick kitchen, the carnival scene and the fluorescent garden. Congratulations to all.
