The panto season is now in full swing and this Society brought a new look and lots of innovation to this famous tale for this year’s show. Flamboyant Dame, Beyonce Castle, played with verve by Gordon Massie is skint and her daydreaming son, Jack (Seonade Sparey) a good looking principal boy, and Simple Simon, Billy Muir, (a comical performance this) are no help to her. So Moomoo the Cow (Sharon McLaren) has to be sold in order to pay the rent to the nasty Giant’s horrible henchman Lord Wormling, convincingly played by Paul Campbell, with a specially shaven head! Add more assorted characters – a delightful Princess Jill (Ellen Ryder), a “camp” King (Neil Hutton), charming Fairy Nuff; and you have the perfect recipe for a great panto. There were lots of fine little Elves under the watchful eye of the Wizard (Brad Wilson); a fabulous growing Beanstalk; plus some wonderful digital magic as the principals were transported back down to earth in an elevator from Cloudland to escape from the terrible Giant (Stuart Young). Even TV’s Strictly Come Dancing got into the tale with amusing consequences and there were lots of pop songs to set feet tapping; and a Christmas Finale sing-along for all.
