This was a musical extravaganza, featuring four of Broadway and the West End Blockbuster Musicals.
The show opened with a compilation from West Side Story and all the famous songs were well received by a very receptive audience. The sequence featured soloists Michael Cairns, Jonathon Patton, Melissa Bell and Lynn Patton, who were all in fine voice, with the songs and they were vary ably backed by an enthusiastic chorus
We were then treated to a selection from Matilda by the society junior section and what a lot of stars they turned out to be, particularly a delightful Gemma Spurr playing Matilda, what a little star. Having seen Matilda recently in the West End, I enjoyed the section very much. One little drawback, for me perhaps was the fact that all the songs are very long and I thought the same at the London production. Matilda brought us nicely to the interval, when a cup of coffee was very welcome.
The second half got under way with Guys and Dolls, my particular favourite, having previously played Nathan, and directed the show. All the numbers were very well performed and featured the chorus and soloists Pamela Bell, Zareena Abidi- Sheldon, Michael Cairns, Trevor Young, Trevor Mossop and terry Minter. This was a very special treat for me.
The show ended with a selection from Miss Saigon, all the wonderful numbers featured. Why God, Last Night of the World, Bui Doi, they were all superb, and offered a fitting finale to a wonderful evenings entertainment. Again the numbers featured chorus and previously mentioned soloists.
The show was directed by Nerissa Nicholas, she created plenty of movement, and choreographed by Danielle Carter, who created some lovely routines. Congratulations to all concerned for a great nights entertainment. Just another little grouse before I finish, the backing quite often drowned the singers. A little more control was needed.
