With an impressive set, the opening entrance of beautifully costumed fairies set the scene for a good interpretation of one of the best known of Gilbert and Sullivan collaborations.
As usual the orchestra was one of the highlights of the evening. Excellent chorus singing throughout, particularly by the fairies, giving good backing to the principals. Fine performances by Mike McGhee as the Lord Chancellor, Margaret Askham, the Queen of the Fairies, and James Davies as Private Willis led the way. Les Plimby as Strephon, and Helen Blatch as Phyllis, complimented each other as our hero and heroine. Paul Blackmore as the Earl of Mountararat and Gordon Fletcher as Earl Tolloller, along with Jenny Smith in the title role completed the principal line-up. Traditional Gilbert and Sullivan with no frills.
