Central Musical Theatre Company gave a most impressive interpretation of this Sondheim musical. The cast proved to be more than a match for the wordy music score. Vocally strong in every department they all deserve great credit for their performances.
Opening the proceedings, Colin Tarrant as the Narrator, gave a laid back sardonic portrayal. I was impressed by Julie Berrisford as Cinderella, and Emily Cooper as Little Red Ridinghood, both exuding confidence and comfortable in their roles. Rachael Wyatt as the Witch was outstanding, giving a most dominating and believable interpretation. Top accolade must go to Sarah Towle as the Baker`s Wife, a standout display, superb vocally, a captivating performance. She was well supported by Adrian Redfern as the Baker, who was solid vocally throughout. Other notable roles were Greg Tabberer as Jack , Rebecca McAllister as Rapunzel, and Mark Jeffery and Julian Walker as the Princes.
An innovative set worked well in the confined performance space, it was well costumed, with a balanced orchestra which did not drown out the performances. Apart from minor lighting and sound issues, this proved to be an outstanding evening`s entertainment.
