This was my first visit to The Harlequin Theatre and Mid Cheshire Youth Theatre. What a lovely playing space and with such friendly members.
The open set looked fabulous, worked really well and props were used very effectively. Some of the players appeared to be miked but there were a few technical issues with sound. The lighting plot worked very well.
The Sondheim score whilst better known now since the film, is very difficult with few songs with great melodies but the traditional tales and characters pull this show through. These youngsters performed beautifully with many superb vocals on such a difficult score.
The choreography was contemporary and suited every ability and character well. The small band sounded fabulous and the Director had clearly worked hard on the characterisations with the players.
Alex Williams and Emily Hopkins played the Baker and his wife with great gusto and chemistry. Great vocals from both. Cinderella was played feistily and with brilliant clumsiness by Caitlin Sherwood with a nice vocal on a difficult part. Ben Wallace had the most gorgeous vocals as Jack and after a couple of scenes looked more comfortable in the role.
Beth Dale was lovely as Little Red Riding Hood with a sweet nature as well as a sweet tooth! Lovely vocals too. Paige Grindrod was excellent as the Witch and the transformation was brilliant. Super vocals and acting from this young lady.
Rapunzel was nicely played by Zoe Murison and the Princes were well acted by Jordan Parker and Nathan Flaherty. Jordan also played the wolf with some lovely comedic touches.
The supporting players worked hard and kept the pace racing along telling the familiar tales with a dark twist. A special mention goes to Jake Grayson and Marcus Dolman who played the very endearing Milky White who both danced beautifully and acted their socks off (albeit under a sheet).
I had a lovely evening watching a very talented society. A job well done by everyone involved.
