This was the first time I had ever seen this Sondheim/Lapine musical. I found it most unusual as it featured a handful of pantomime characters encountering each other in strange circumstances. Setting the scenes of unfolding mystery, the scenery was a wonderful work of art with great attention to details. The lighting and the superb sound effects all added greatly to the ambience. Full marks to David Hlalgate on his one-man accompaniment using a variety of clever machines and a keyboard to great effect. Never was it too loud for the singers. Clare Allen's choreography was in keeping with the magical aspects of the show. I cannot truthfully say I am a fan of Sondheim's music, but all those taking part suited their roles very well and performed extremely well. It would be totally unfair of me to select any for individual  mention, for all of them were equally effective. 'Effective' is the word that describes the costumes in this show; they were a credit to those responsible for them. The nature of the score meant I didn't have a tune going through my mind as I left Boston for home, but I did have a lovely feeling of joy at having seen an excellent production.
