Nearly the whole cast were on stage throughout this Agatha Christie spoof. Wendy Quinn played old Mrs Gagarin, who became the murder victim before the curtain even opened. Noel Cornick took the role of her son Victor with bumbling manner. His “friend”, Miss Duck, was played by tall and statuesque Anna Phipps - perfectly cast as the very sexy lady! Robin Masefield was convincing as houseguest Mr Butler – a quiet man evidently suffering from memories of an indiscretion when 9 years old! Mrs Gardener, the cook (Philippa Cornick) held a wonderfully imbecilic grin on her face throughout, while Mr Cook, the gardener (William Hunter) also looked somewhat vacant! Trevor McLucas as Guest, the butler was perfect as the deaf old retainer. All performers were well drilled in dialogue timing (what is the secret of good comedy ……..?!) Mary (Lisa Morrow) appeared briefly with a hoover – till the end of the play, where nearly everyone was revealed to be other than they appeared!
Undoubtedly Stephen Connolly and Gary Gillespie dominated as Inspector Drake and Sergeant Plod. Hardly a word between them was without malapropism or innuendo – and a fair amount of old-fashioned slapstick! Stephen’s dialogue, while ridiculous, was wordy and difficult. Gary played incompetent sidekick Sergeant Plod with deadpan face. These two make a great pairing.
The Set - the lounge of Mrs Gargarin’s house – was solid, well painted and dressed. Sound effects in particular were timely and appropriate. Responsible for these was Director David Marshall who has honed his craft to great effect.
